The latest Eurobarometer survey reveals a resounding concern among Europeans regarding environmental issues, with over three-quarters of respondents indicating a direct impact on their daily lives and health. This sentiment underscores a consistent belief in the necessity of EU environmental legislation, as echoed by 84% of those surveyed. Concerns are particularly pronounced regarding pollution costs, with 92% advocating for companies to bear the expenses of cleaning up pollution, while 74% feel public authorities should also share this responsibility.
Water-related challenges emerged prominently, with 78% of respondents supporting increased EU measures to address issues such as pollution and scarcity. Droughts are identified as a significant concern in countries like Spain, Cyprus, and Malta. Moreover, there is widespread dissatisfaction with current efforts across sectors like industry, energy, tourism, and agriculture in efficiently managing water resources. The survey also reflects strong public endorsement for advancing the circular economy and restoring natural habitats as effective strategies to combat environmental degradation. Additionally, nearly 60% of respondents express readiness to pay more for sustainably produced goods that are recyclable or environmentally friendly, underscoring a growing preference for sustainable consumer choices.
