EIB increases investment in Portugal, prioritizing companies and green transition

In 2023, Portugal received over €2.1 billion in new financial commitments from the European Investment Bank Group (EIB Group), marking a more than 25% increase from the previous year. This substantial investment, representing 0.8% of Portuguese GDP, positioned Portugal among the top seven recipients of EIB support relative to GDP. Approximately half of this funding was allocated to small businesses and mid-caps, bolstering their role as key drivers of economic growth, job creation, and sustainable development. Cohesion financing accounted for more than 66% of the EIB Group's investment in Portugal, with significant contributions toward sustainable energy, natural resources, digital technologies, innovation, and regional development.

The EIB Group's support in 2023 extended to various sectors, including €1.8 billion for large-scale infrastructure projects, €604 million for sustainable energy and natural resources, and €282 million for innovation, digitalisation, and human capital. The European Investment Fund (EIF), a part of the EIB Group, contributed €366 million to stimulate innovation and business growth. Notable projects included a €115 million investment in The Navigator Company for a high-efficiency recovery boiler and a €24 million loan to the municipality of Loures for climate adaptation and economic development. The EIB Group's commitment to green financing increased by 4%, emphasizing its dedication to climate action and environmental sustainability.
